Livorno advertises a hop on and hop off bus tour around the town, when you get there and go to information centre they say buy a ticket on the bus, when the bus arrives, several people already have tickets sold to them by someone loitering near the bus stop which we didn't see.
The problem with Livorno is that the bus only operates when a cruise ship is in and they have only one bus and is every hour, when you have more than one cruise ship in, this is just not adequate, they take your money but not much good when you cannot get on a bus.

We waited for an hour only to be told the driver won’t tske cash, so we finally found where to buy tickets. At the info place! Queued for almost another hour, and it was a total waste of time and money! Tickets were 13 euros per person, for a one hour ride! The driver drove st the rate of knots, the seats are very uncomfortable, and in my opinion, a total waste of time and money!

Arrived by ship, not wanting to go to Pisa ect we took hop on hop off bus to explore the city & its history. Went out of town to Palazzo, got off & the ticket gave us a ride to the top in this little train. At the top one could look over Livorno & out to sea, checked out the church, had a coffee, back down on the train & onto the bus back to town. Looked around town some of the areas we saw.

Unfortunate to arrive in Livorno at the same time as another cruise liner. To save time bought tickets for the hop on/off bus at the terminal. On arriving at Livorno discovered bus driver also selling tickets when people were boarding the bus. A lot of people didn't get on and as there was only 1 bus some elderly couldn't wait in the sun for the next one 1 hour later. Basically they are selling tickets for seats on the hop on/off they do not have. Tried to complain at the tourist information centre but they didn't want to know. I know they couldn't do anything about it but it does reflect on their city. Advice then if you want to go on bus wait until you're there and then buy. Sorry not have seen more of Livorno - they say it's a beautiful place.

We were not disappointed with our experience in Livorna on the hop on hop off bus, what an amazing way to see the city. Lots of languages at your disposal and such a good commentary. We would definitely recommend taking hop on hop offs when travelling it is quite inexpensive and you get the history of the place.

Very nice trip. We picked up the bus right next to where the cruise shuttle bus dropped us off. Pretty beachside city. Included in the cost was a ticket to the funicular that gave great views of the city, beaches, harbor and our cruise ship. Friendly driver.

Did this on day five and we were happy we did. a great way to see the city. Lines A and C are worth the time, not too sure about line B.

I think everyone who travelled lately and used the hop on hop off bus will say it is time for a new bus. This was an old and tired bus. However we were only in Livorno for the day and we did enjoy the area covered.
Always the hop on buses are a great way of seeing a town.

You can walk around most of the main stops by yourself. We did the tour to get the commentary, and history, but didn't really learn much. The tour went out to a palazzo in the country, but the little train which usually connects was closed for service, so no-one got off, which was disappointing.
It cost €12.

Recorded tour through earphones. In just an hour the hop on hop off bus covers all the highlights. At €12 per person reasonable.

Only one bus that runs every hour and is consistently over booked. There was a father who bought tickets at 12 noon for the 2 pm bus and there was no room for him and his family. The ticket lady was no where to be found, just the driver who didn't know anything. The father commondered the bus and took the keys. He and the driver almost began to fight. My wife was standing in the middle of all this when I pulled her out of the way and off the bus. We had waited an hour for the 2pm bus and never did get on. We lost 20 euros buscause we prebought tickets. The local tourist bureau pleaded ignorance.

Unfortunately this was a horrible experience in Livorno. Ticket sales are made through sales people walking around the city center who are selling tickets for the hop on and off bus’s as well as other bus tours. The city center was chaos as there were several cruise ships that were in port that day. People were swarming the sales people to get information and buy tickets. There could be organization if they could simply set up a ticket booth so people could queue. The hop on bus only runs once per hour and there were more tickets sold than seats. People got very aggressive and the bus driver had to tell people to calm down, however people were already angry because they waited 1.5 hours to get on a bus. Needless to say it appears there is only one bus that goes around. It doesn’t seem reasonable to get off because the next bus doesn’t come for an hour and there will not be seats. Overall I can not recommend this tour unless they can fix the problems.

The problem is there are not enough buses for all the tourists, especially when a ship is in the harbour. We paid the money for a Hop On Hop Off tour but we only got off once because we realised no-one was getting off so it was impossible to board the bus again once you had stopped to ride the funicolare cable car. The bus actually didn't stop once after picking us up with people standing in the aisles to make room.
It was quite warm so this made it very hot with so many people aboard. We were very disappointed. Take a private tour bus or a taxi.

My family and I recently visited Livorno while on a cruise. We decided to do the Hop On/Hop Off tour. We had utilized this service in a number of other cities both in the US and Euripe and have enjoyed it tremendously. This, however, was a great disappointment.
There should have been about 10 stops. When we got on the bus a posted sign said 2 of the stops were not open. The driver proceeded to drive very quickly through the city center. The headphones didn't work at every seat and before we knew it we were at stop #5 (Funicolare train). We wondered why we hadn't stopped earlier because those were not the stops the sign indicated were closed. Nevertheless, the driver instructed everyone to get off the bus, gave us tickets for the train, and said he'd be back in an hour to pick us up.
The train was fun and the sites were lovely from the top. An hour later he was there.
This is where the tour bombed. The driver sped off and before we knew it we were back at stop #1. He never stopped ANYWHERE. We were then asked to disembark, as there was a huge line waiting.
I still have no idea what happened. It seems as if he was the only driver and it was the only bus and possibly he has a stake in the train ride.
All I can say is don't waste your $14+. It's NOT worth it.

This bus runs hourly we took it to the sanctuary of montenero. We spent an hour there and returned to get back on bus which never arrived, waited an hour for the next one, which also never arrived. Took a while to get through to the phone number who said we must have missed it, on being told we had been there over an hour that the bus was coming. Phoned back after another 15 minutes to be told leave your e mail and we will reimburse. At this time we had only an hour to get back to our ship, with the help of locals we got on a local bus to get back into Livorno. Not a good experience causing much anxiety. Would not recommend

Great Little bus company (Tuscany Bus) in Livorno. Besides showing you the town the "hop on hop off" bus is an inexpensive way to get to the Sanctuary of Montenero, which is a religious complex on Monte Nero. The Funicular up the mountain is free with the bus' ticket. Also, Tuscan Bus has coaches to Pisa, Florence, etc. with really reasonable fares (we went to Pisa). Gabriela, the ticket agent at the cruise port, is a sweetheart and even guides on the bus.
